Fibromyalgia & Chronic Facial Pain

Widespread body pain with  jaw or facial discomfort? It could be fibromyalgia.

At Advanced TMJ Maxillofacial Pain & Sleep Center, we understand that pain isn’t always limited to one area. If you have fibromyalgia and are experiencing jaw pain, headaches, or facial tightness, you’re not imagining it. These symptoms are common—and manageable—with the right approach.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive difficulties (“fibro fog”), and heightened sensitivity to touch. It affects the way the nervous system processes pain signals—often amplifying them.

While fibromyalgia is a full-body condition, it frequently involves the face, jaw, head, and neck, leading many patients to seek TMJ or dental care before receiving a correct diagnosis.

How Fibromyalgia Affects the Face and Jaw

  • Myofascial pain in facial, jaw, and neck muscles

  • Trigger points or tender spots in the masseter, temporalis, and SCM

  • TMJ dysfunction from muscle tension or clenching

  • Tension-type headaches or migraines

  • Increased sensitivity to minor jaw movements, cold weather, or touch

  • Sleep-related disorders like bruxism (jaw clenching/grinding) or non-restorative sleep

Common Symptoms We See in Our Patients

  • Dull, aching facial pain

  • Jaw stiffness, especially in the morning

  • Worsening pain with stress, cold weather, or poor sleep

  • Headaches that begin in the temples or back of the neck

  • Tenderness when touching the face or jaw

  • Fatigue, anxiety, or brain fog alongside facial pain

Diagnosis at Our Seattle Orofacial Pain Center

We understand the complex interplay between fibromyalgia, TMJ disorders, and facial pain syndromes. Many of our patients with fibromyalgia have seen multiple providers without a clear diagnosis.

We take a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Review of medical and rheumatologic history

  • Mapping of facial, jaw, and neck muscle trigger points

  • Screening for overlapping conditions (e.g., TMD, nerve pain, headaches, sleep issues)

  • Sleep and fatigue assessments

  • Collaboration with your rheumatologist, PCP, or pain specialist as needed
